Aarhus Residence

This new-built bungalow is the work of a young couple. She was a freshly graduated architect, he a freshly graduated carpenter when they set out to challenge their respective professions and create their dream house.

In a small town outside the Danish city of Aarhus, the couple bought a lot that was subject to very specific building regulations. The building had to have white facades and a red tile roof with a slope of 35 degrees. These regulations posed a challenge for the young couple, but they also simplified their decision-making process. The house took 12 months to build. The construction process was an important learning process for the young couple, and the end result is very successful.

From the lobby, one steps directly into the large kitchen-cum-family room, which is held in a clean and simple style. In the kitchen, the couple has chosen to conceal the cooking niche by building it into the cupboards, so that all the everyday kitchen utensils and equipment are conveniently tucked away. The kitchen-cum-family room is separated from the living room by a wall clad with wooden laths.

The wall forms a decorative feature between the ground floor and basement and also serves as a sound-absorbing element to provide optimal acoustics in the large family room. An elegant staircase leads from the ground floor to the bed rooms on the lower floor. Like the floor, the steps are made of Dinesen Douglas, and the wide planks help provide a warm atmosphere in the stylish home.
