Towering up to 60 metres tall, Douglas is a tree that stands out. The grand expression is preserved in the planks, where the unique grain bears testimony to nature’s power and beauty.
We source our raw wood mainly from the Black Forest, and only the best of the 80 to 120 year-old trees have what it takes to get through the eye of the needle. It is this careful selection and the extraordinary craftsmanship that place Dinesen Douglas in a class of its own.
Made in widths of 30 to 50 centimetres, GrandOak planks are exceptionally wide. Another similarly remarkable feature is the low amount of knots and the calm structure of the up to 4 metre long planks.
GrandOak is made of the very best raw wood from large oak trees that are up to 200 years old. Even though we secure the largest and best trees in the forest, very few planks have what it takes to be categorised as this exclusive variant.
With HeartOak, we make a virtue of the heritage and inner secrets of the oak tree. The 150 to 200 year old oak trees tell a very special story. The hard winters, dry summers, storm and wind they have lived through leave traces. Some of these traces can be seen in the annual rings and the size of the knots, while others appear only when the tree is sawn-up.
During the cutting and drying process, the wood has to release the inner tensions from a long life in the woods, leaving characteristic cracks in the tree. In our production facilities, the tree is gently processed and the natural cracks are preserved. As a particularly beautiful detail, the cracks are locked by butterfly joints of oak.
As an old family business, we appreciate the importance of planning for the future. Therefore, we only use raw wood from sustainable forestry where the stands are tended with the greatest care and respect for nature. We source most of our wood from Germany, but we also work with other European countries where forestry has been based on sustainable principles for centuries.
An important element of sustainable forestry is cutting down one tree at a time, thus giving the trees a chance to grow strong and live out their total capacity, before they are felled and ready to serve new purposes. That is sustainability in practice.
