Collector's Loft

In Greenwich Village, an art collector has converted a loft overlooking Manhattan into a combined gallery and home. In fact, the loft is a work of art in its own right.

The 440 m2 loft is both long and wide. To balance the room, the owner has in collaboration with the architectural firm UNStudio added an S-shaped wall that runs the full length of the sprawling flat. In combination with 18,000 LED lights, the S-shape creates a sense of infinity while also achieving a subtle yet distinct segmentation of the flat and its many different functions.

The bedroom, bathrooms, kitchen and office are placed along the sides, while the large collection of modern art occupies the core space in the centre of the flat. The floor is Douglas. Together with the simple and light interior, the long and wide planks create a discreet background that lets the art take centre stage.

The gallery flows into a library, constructed in a narrow hallway with built-in lit shelves. The hallway helps give the flat an intimate feel, while the office lets the world in through the floor-to-ceiling windows that frame the Manhattan skyline.
